Avoid a Green Smile This St. Patrick’s Day

st-patty'sWhile St. Patrick’s Day is known as for “The Wearing of the Green,” the build-up of green food coloring in our food and drinks on March 17th can negatively effect our smiles. Here are a few ways that dentist in Southwest Portland Dr. Melissa Beadnell and her team at Beadnell Family Dentistry help patients keep their teeth white and bright!

Don’t “Wear the Green” On Your Teeth

The traditional “Wearing of the Green” every March 17th commemorates the death of St. Patrick (AD 385–461), the patron saint of Ireland. He is known for using the three-leaved shamrock to explain the Holy Trinity to those he taught through the church.

The phrase “Wearing of the Green” refers to the tradition of pinning shamrocks or green ribbons to clothing as part of the St. Patrick’s Day celebration. Consider stocking up and showing off shamrocks for your St. Patrick’s Day festivities instead of drinking green-colored beverages or eating green-colored food. This will demonstrate your enthusiasm without subjecting your teeth to green food coloring!

Invest in Dental Prevention

If the Shamrock Shake or the green beer proves irresistible, follow it up with a teeth cleaning and oral exam at Beadnell Family Dentistry. During this appointment, you will receive a professional cleaning by one of our hygienists. We may also take digital images of your mouth if they are needed. Dr. Beadnell will then provide a thorough oral examination and answer any questions you might have about your dental health.

Dr. Beadnell recommends that patients come in twice a year for a preventative teeth cleaning and oral exam, but additional appointments may be necessary based on your personal needs. These important appointments are a valuable investment in your dental health, saving time, money and potential dental problems later on.

Consider Whitening Your Smile

If your smile is dull or you notice stains on the surfaces of your teeth, this may be a good time to consider teeth whitening. At Beadnell Family Dentistry, we offer a few different options to conveniently and inexpensively whiten your smile.

At your preventative dental appointment, just let us know that you would like to whiten your teeth and we will prepare your custom trays during that time. Within a couple of days, your trays will be ready for pick up, along with a special bleaching agent that needs to be used an hour each day. For patients who would like to experience in-office teeth whitening, Dr. Beadnell and her team provide Zoom! Teeth Whitening services, in which teeth can be whitened up to eight shades in only an hour.

Some extra care for your teeth during this time will protect them from the “Wearing of the Green” this St. Patrick’s Day. Call Dr. Melissa Beadnell, a dentist in Hillsdale Portland, and her team at 503-244-4837 to schedule your appointment at Beadnell Family Dentistry.
